Surf Service

Shaping surfboards since 1979, and being a complete and total surf addict since 1974, surfboards have been through a lot of changes. Each period in shaping history has taken us to one extreme or another. Our own opinions as shapers, feedback from other surfers working with us or riding our boards at any given time. All of the bits and pieces, and trial and error we have been through (changes in outlines, fins, bottom contours, rails, rocker) have left us on a higher plane, and with a fuller comprehension, of what a surfer needs in his or her surfboard. There are numerous factors that come into play when ordering a board. What follows is basically an outline of the information we need to help us put the right board under your feet.

General Information
Age
Weight
Height

How long have you been surfing?
If you?re been surfing for 10 years, but only get in the water once a year, let us know

Where do you surf, or where do you plan to use your new board?

Level of surfing
Beginner
Mediocre
Good
Excellent
(This a good question to ask someone who knows you)

Last Board
What was the last board you had, and what did you like or not like about it?

Board Measurements
Length, width and thickness of the board you would like to order (if you are a beginner or someone who has never paid much attention to details like width and thickness we can help you out on that.)

Tails
The choice is yours. If you need some help let us know. They all have their reasons and a lot of us have your favorites for different types of waves.
  Round
  Round Pin
  Square
  Squash
  Swallow
  Diamond

Rails
There are quite a few types of rails we use on our boards, usually depending on board length and a surfer's personal preference. Let us know what you?re used to or leave it up to us if you are a beginner.
  Soft
  Hard
  Blocky

Type of bottom contour
Like the rails, there're a lot of bottoms type.
* Flat, Concave, Vee, Invert Vee and Channels are all bottom types.

Fins
  a) Fixed
  b) F.C.S. System ? Changeable

a) Fixed fins are fiberglassed on the board, we have a great number of outlines depending on length and type of surfboard, and the type of wave you plan to surf with your board
b) The changeable fins F.C.S. are very good for two reasons;
1 - Most damage to boards in transport is in the fin area, there?s nothing worse than arriving at your final destination to find out that two of your fins were snapped off in the airplane.
2 ? F.C.S. offers a variety of outlines. I have team riders that use one outline in a 6?0?? surfboard in mushy beach breaks, and another one for the same board for solid 8? reef breaks. You can use one board for two very different types of waves, all because of a fin change.

Airbrush or all white
If you plan to have your board painted please send us a detailed explanation of your idea. For basic paint jobs we have a set price. If it?s a complicated airbrush or has any type of lettering, let us know, and we will quote a price.

Type of foam
We use Clark Foam in all of our surfboards. We have two types of Clark foam: Superblue and Superlight.

The superblue is a stronger blank and will hold up a bit longer than the superlight. If you?re looking for a nice light competition style board, go for the superlight.

Fiberglassing
Glassing influences the final weight of your board. We use sylmar resin and hexel warp glass, we offer 6 oz and 4 oz glass. Most of our stock boards are 2x4 oz on top and 1x4 oz on bottom. If you want a super hardboard we will glass it with 1x6 oz + 1x4 oz on top and 1x6 oz on the bottom, as mentioned earlier your final weight will increase but in longboards, mini malibus and big guns it might not make a difference to you.

Finish
a) Dry sand (Used in most boards today. Final weight being the reason).

b) Polished. A polished board after being dry sanded is taken one step farther. Another thin coat of resin is applied which is sanded with very fine sandpaper and than buffed to a high polished shine. Structurally they?re not much stronger (the strength of a board is in the glassing and foam), they do hold up a bit longer on the little bumps against the rocks, car doors, and all the other places we don?t really want to hit. And a beautiful shape with the killer airbrush looks unreal when it?s all buffed out!

Final Note
That pretty much covers what we need to know in order to make you a custom surfboard. I just want to mention that we also have a full stock of various sizes and types of boards that we carry year round, if you don?t want to wait for a custom, ask us here for a board that meet your needs and surfing.
Also if you are looking to try the sport of surfing but are not sure you will like it, a rental board or a cheap second hand board may be your best bet. We have a full line of both so keep that in mind.
